Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The 25th-ranked Captains of Christopher Newport held the Methodist women's basketball team scoreless for roughly 10 minutes in posting a 61-37 win over the Monarchs at the Riddle Center on Saturday afternoon.
After
Brianna Robinson hit a jumper off a feed from
T.T. Taylor to pull the Monarchs (7-3, 3-1 USA South) to within three (21-18) with 8:02 left in the first half, MU went cold from the field missing on each of its next 10 shots from the floor and turning the ball over six times as CNU (11-0, 4-0 USA South) built a 35-18 lead early in the second half. A layup by Taylor at the 17:47 mark of the second half broke the Monarchs out of their slump and made it a 15-point game (35-20). Methodist would pull as close as 13 points (42-29) with 13:17 to play, but CNU responded with a 7-0 run to go up 20 (49-29) with 10:57 to play en route to the win.
The game was a back-and-forth affair in the early going, with the teams trading 6-0 runs to produce a 6-6 contest by the 15:33 mark. A triple by
Iesha Hayes gave MU its first lead of the game (9-6) at the 14:29 mark before CNU crawled back in the game and the Monarchs shooting touch deserted them.
Methodist finished at 32.0 percent shooting (8-25) for the game, including just 15.4 percent (2-13) from beyond the arc, while the Captains finished at 47.6 percent (20-42) shooting from the floor and 73.9 percent (17-23) from the line. CNU also held a decided 43-21 edge on the boards.
Hayes led the Monarchs with 11 points and three steals. Taylor and
Miriya Bryant each added five points, and Robinson grabbed a team-best five boards.
Tia Perry and Camry Green each scored 13 points to lead the Captains and Nicole Mitchell added 12 points. Green also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and Perry chipped in seven boards, two assists and two blocks.
The Monarchs are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Salem for a 7:00 pm contest.
