Methodist Men's Hoops Falls at Shenandoah, 84-77

Box Score WINCHESTER, Va. -- Shenandoah closed the game on a 17-4 run to rally past the Methodist men's basketball team on Friday evening at Shingleton Gymnasium in the Monarchs' season opener.
 
Bryan Hockaday led the Monarchs (0-1) with a double-double of 17 points and 16 rebounds, and Brandon Monk added 16 points and seven rebounds off the bench, but MU could not overcome 19 turnovers and just 10-of-20 shooting from the foul line.
 
In the first half, Hockaday triggered an 11-3 run for MU with a short jump shot and would score six points during the run as MU turned a three-point lead (16-13) into an 11-point cushion (30-19) with 3:35 left in the first period.
 
Sam Lawrence cut Shenandoah's (0-1) deficit to five points (30-25) with 2:00 on the clock on a jumper off a feed from Aaron Patterson, but Methodist pushed back out to an nine-point advantage (36-27) as Monk converted a layup just before the first half buzzer.
 
In the second half, the Monarchs still held a double-digit lead at 43-33 with 16:42 to play before the Hornets tied the game at 43-43 after scoring 10 straight points over the next 1:14. The Monarchs called timeout and following the stoppage Desmond Parker nailed a jumper following a Keith Corbett offensive rebound for a 45-43 lead at the 14:59 mark. Methodist would begin to inch away from SU, regaining a six-point lead (73-67) on Monk's bucket with 2:03 to play.
 
Shenandoah answered with a triple by Avery Green, followed by baskets from Bryce Mitchell and Green again to take a one-point lead (74-73) at the 1:01 mark. The Monarchs had an opportunity to regain the lead on their next possession, but Monk missed a pair of free throws and another layup by Mitchell gave SU a 76-73 lead with 41 seconds to play and the Hornets would keep MU at bay down the stretch.
 
For the game, Hockaday shot 7-of-12 from the floor and Monk was 7-of-15. However, the rest of the team shot just 16-of-43 (.372) and the Monarchs shot 42.9 percent (30-70) as a team. Shenandoah finished up at 48.3 percent (29-60) from the floor and 23-of-33 (.697) from the line. Methodist outrebounded the Hornets 49-33 and forced SU into 13 turnovers.
 
T.J. Gill added 10 points for MU and Austin Pack had nine points and three assists. Keith Corbett chipped in eight points and four boards.
 
The Hornest were led by Green's game-high 29 points on 10-of-17 shooting. He also added six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Jared Carithers totaled 16 points and Mitchell had 10 on 4-of-6 shooting. Xavier Alston grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
 
Methodist is back in action on Saturday when it takes on McDaniel in the consolation game of the BB&T Tip-Off Classic at 6:00 pm.
