Hockaday's Double-Double Not Enough as MU Men's Hoops Falls to McDaniel, 57-51

Box Score WINCHESTER, Va. -- Bryan Hockaday turned in his second straight double-double en route to All-Tournament honors, but the Methodist men's basketball team fell, 57-51, to McDaniel on Saturday evening in the consolation game of the BB&T Tip-Off Classic hosted by Shenandoah University.
 
Hockaday totaled 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting and grabbed 12 rebounds, but MU shot just 32.7 percent (17-52) from the floor and turned the ball over 16 times in falling to 0-2. McDaniel improved to 1-1 on the season.
 
After falling behind by seven points (18-11) at the 7:29 mark of a sluggish first half, MU used a 13-4 scoring run over the next 7:16 to pull ahead, 24-22, with 47 seconds left in the half. Hockaday keyed the run with a jump shot and Austin Pack pulled MU even with a layup. A pair of free throws by Keith Corbett gave the Monarchs their first lead since a 6-4 advantage at the 16:19 mark.
 
McDaniel's Nic Martin opened the second period with a three-pointer to put McDaniel up 27-24, a lead that the Green Terror would stretch out to seven points on Time Stewart's jumper (40-33) with 10:12 to play. The Monarchs answered with another scoring run, this time a 10-0 spurt  that gave them a 43-33 lead with 7:19 to play. T.J. Gill opened the run with a layup in transition, and then pulled MU ahead with a three-point play. Methodist held the lead until the 4:29 mark, when Cameron Royster spilt a pair of free throws to pull McDaniel even at 45-45. Martin drilled a pair of free throws on the Green Terror's next trip down the court for a two-point advantage (47-45). Methodist regained a one-point lead (48-47) courtesy of a triple by Corbett with 3:15 left on the clock, but McDaniel closed the game on a 10-3 run to hold off the Monarchs.
 
In addition to Hockaday's double-double, Corbett chipped in a game-high 14 points to go with seven boards. He was 3-of-4 from the floor and 7-of-9 from the charity stripe. Pack finished with nine points and six rebounds, and Desmond Parker chipped in five points, four rebounds and three assists off the bench.
 
As a team, Methodist outrebounded McDaniel, 45-31, including 16-9 on the offensive glass. The Green Terror finished at 39.3 percent shooting (22-56) from the floor and 50.0 percent (9-18) from the line, but turned the ball over just seven times.
 
Wesley Brooks led McDaniel with 12 points, six rebounds and three steals. Stewart added 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting off the bench, and Phillip Perry notched 10 points. Martin finished with eight points, four boards and three assists.
 
Methodist is back in action in its home opener on Wednesday.  The Monarchs host Roanoke beginning at 7:00 pm.
