Late Bucket Sinks Monarchs at Guilford, 68-66

Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Matt McCarthy's jumper with two seconds remaining broke a 66-66 tie and lifted Guilford to a 68-66 win over the Methodist men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon at Ragan-Brown Fieldhouse.
 
McCarthy's game-winning jumper came after the Monarchs (2-6) had rallied from a 64-59 with less than three minutes to play. Keemon Ingram began MU's rally with a three pointer that pulled the Monarchs to within a pair (64-62) at the 2:32 mark. After Zeb Richardson pushed the Quakers' (8-0) lead back to four points (66-62), Keith Corbett converted a pair of field goals to tie the game at 66-66 with 17 seconds to play before McCarthy's game winner.
 
In the first half, Methodist found itself trailing by four points (26-22) following Jake Hopkins tip in at the 5:24 mark. However, the Monarchs responded with a 6-1 spurt that gave them a 28-27 lead with 3:27 left to play in the first half after a Tabias Hilliard layup. A pair of free throws by Bryan Hockaday gave MU a 30-27 lead with just over three minutes on the clock and the Monarchs took a 32-31 lead into the break.
 
Both teams struggled shooting the ball in the early going. Methodist made just 35.1 percent (13-37) of its field-goal attempts in the opening 20 minutes, while the Quakers shot 34.3 percent (12-35). The two teams also combined to shoot 1-for-18 from beyond the arc.
 
In the second half, Guilford opened the scoring and maintained the lead until Brandon Monk gave MU a 50-49 lead after completing a three-point play at the 11:08 mark. Richardson gave GC the lead back at the 10:44 mark and the Quakers pulled out to a five-point lead with 5:27 left.
 
For the game, the Monarchs shot 37.5 percent (27-72) from the field, and just 3-of-19 from three-point range. Guilford finished the game at an even 40.0 percent (28-70) and held a 50-40 edge in on the galss.
 
Hockaday led the Monarchs with a double-double of 15 points and 17 rebounds. Hilliard added 11 points and seven assists, and Desmond Parker chipped in nine points and five rebounds.
 
Guilford was paced by McCarthy, who scored a game-high 21 points to go with nine rebounds and three steals. Jake Hopkins added 16 points and 16 rebounds, and Richardson totaled nine points and nine boards.
 
The Monarchs return to the court on Dec. 30 when they host Connecticut College at 2:00 pm.
