Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Greensboro College ran out to a 33-21 lead by halftime en route to a 74-57 win over the Methodist men's basketball team on Wednesday evening at Hanes Gym.
The Monarchs were held to just 5-of-21shooting in the opening 20 minutes and committed 18 turnovers as Greensboro pulled away late in the half. Methodist had taken an early 10-6 lead following a triple from
Keemon Ingram followed by a layup by
Austin Pack at the 15:41 mark, but the Pride answered with 12-1 run capped by a Damian Dixon three ball with 9:03 to play that put GC up 18-11.
After a timeout on the floor,
Bryan Hockaday pulled the Monarchs to within five points (18-13) at the 6:48 mark, before Greensboro rattled off another large scoring run. The Pride outscored the Monarchs, 12-4 over the next 4:34 in extending their lead to 30-17 with 2:14 left in the half before going into the break up 33-21.
Greensboro didn't shoot much better in the opening half, making good on just 11-of-29 shot attempts (.379), but the Pride did knock down four three pointers and only committed seven turnovers.
Methodist opened the second period by pulling to within 10 points on several occasions, the last coming at 37-27 on a
Brandon Monk layup with nearly four minutes gone by. GC needed less than three minutes to push its lead out to 19 points (48-29) as Chakiris Moss drilled a pair of free throws with 13:38 on the clock.
For the game Methodist hit on 41.2 percent of its field-goal attempts (21-51) and 11-of-18 free-throw tries. The Monarchs outrebounded the Pride, 38-33, but turned the ball over 31 times to just 16 for Greensboro. The Pride shot 41.4 percent from the floor (24-58) and 18-of-26 from the free-throw line.
Hockaday led the Monarchs with a double-double of 17 points and 16 rebounds.
Kyle Combs added 11 points and Monk chipped in 10.
Devonte Davis led GC with 18 points off the bench and Dixon and Tijani added 17 and 14, respectively. Dixon and Raheem Martin each grabbed a team-best five rebounds and Moss had five steals.
Methodist is back on the court on Sunday when it hosts LaGrange at 4:00 pm.
