Box Score FERRUM, Va. -- A 12-0 scoring run over a 2:25 span midway through the second half propelled Ferrum College to a 76-71 win over Methodist in men's basketball on Saturday afternoon.
Following a
Brandon Monk free throw that gave the Monarchs a 45-44 lead with 12:25 left to play, the Panthers scored the next 12 points of the contest to assume a 56-45 with 10:00 showing on the clock.
From there, the Monarchs tried chipping away at the lead, pulling to within four points on four different occasions, and with 3:05 remaining, pulled as close as three points (67-64) following a jumper from
Bryan Hockaday.
However, five straight points by FC pushed the Panthers' lead back up to eight points (72-64) with 1:43 to play. Ferrum then kept the Monarchs at bay by hitting on 5-of-8 free throws the rest of the way.
In the first half, neither team led by any more than five points as the two teams traded the lead back and forth. After
Keemon Ingram tied the contest at 28-28 with a triple at the 2:31 mark, Lamont King gave the Panthers a 30-28 lead at intermission with a layup 23 seconds before the break.
For the game Methodist shot 48.3 percent (29-60) from the field, compared to 46.0 percent (23-50) for the Panthers. MU held a commanding 38-24 edge on the glass, but the Panthers went to the line 36 times, making 25, compared to just 17 attempts (11-17) for the Monarchs.
Hockaday led the Monarchs with a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Kyle Combs chipped in 10 points and
Brandon Monk added eight. Ingram finished with five points and six rebounds.
The Panthers were led by JD Wallace's 20 points. Jamal Pullen totaled 17 points, including a 9-for-10 showing at the free-throw line, and Lamont King added 14 points and six rebounds.
Methodist is back in action on Wednesday when it plays at Greensboro at 7:00 pm.
