Monarch Women’s Soccer Notches ‘W’, 5-1, Against Guilford

Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Katie Pedersen had three goals and an assist as the Methodist women's soccer team rolled to a 5-1 victory over Guilford on Wednesday afternoon at the Monarch Soccerplex.
 
MU's (1-2) first score of the season came off the foot of Pedersen as her shot hit the left post and rolled into the net, giving the Monarchs a 1-0 lead in 15th minute. Three minutes later, Pedersen assisted on Taylor Cavazos' first collegiate tally, making it a two-goal game. The Quakers (0-3) quickly responded as Kelli Uresti booted a kick past Methodist goalkeeper Sarah Hayden, closing the gap to one goal, 2-1, at the 18:12 mark.
 
Pedersen added her second goal in the 29th minute on a breakaway, beating Guilford goalkeeper Abby Gove in a one-on-one, giving MU another two-goal advantage, 3-1. That would remain the score as both teams stepped off the field at half.
 
As the action resumed, MU's Jessie Oder scored on a free kick in the 66th minute on a set piece from the left side. To cap the Monarchs' offensive effort, Pedersen netted her third goal in the 75th minute, this one coming on a shot that Quaker keeper Gove could not handle, giving her the hat trick.
 
For the afternoon, Methodist held a 29-2 edge in terms of shots, including 14-3 in shots on target. MU's Hayden (1-1) earned the win, making two saves on the day. Gove (0-3) took the loss for Guilford, making nine saves in over 80 minutes of play.
 
The Monarchs will return home next Wednesday against Salem at 5:00 pm.
