Methodist Women’s Basketball Extends Win Streak to Six, Defeats Huntingdon, 82-43

Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The MU women's basketball team topped its second conference opponent in as many days, winning against visiting Huntingdon, 82-43, on Sunday afternoon at the Riddle Center.
 
Already ahead by 18 points at intermission, Methodist (6-1, 2-0 USA South) carried over its strong first-half shooting performance in the second period. The closest the Hawks (5-3, 0-2 USA South) came in the final 20 minutes would be 14 points (50-36) after a Raven Prater layup at the 10:20 mark. The Monarchs would score 17 unanswered points, capped by Sydney Bryan's layup with 5:39 remaining, to move ahead by 31 points (67-36). To close out the action, Methodist tallied 15 of the contest's final 22 points.
 
In the first half, Huntingdon trailed by one point (9-8) with just under eight minutes remaining in the period. MU would rattle off a 28-11 run to wrap up the opening 20 minutes, giving itself a sizable advantage at halftime. During this stretch, Methodist shot 9-of-19 from the field and 10-of-13 from the free throw line. Conversely Huntingdon made 2-of-18 of its shots and turned the ball over 10 times in that same span. Overall the Monarchs shot 48.1 percent from the floor in the first half (13-27) while the Hawks made 16.1 percent of its field-goal attempts in that same time (5-31).
 
By the end of the contest, Methodist posted a 47.3 percent shooting percentage from the field (26-55). In comparison Huntingdon had a 22.4 percent success rate from the floor (15-67), including a 4-of-20 showing from three-point range. Additionally MU held a 47-41 edge in terms of rebounds and attempted 41 free throws compared to HC's 19 attempts.
 
Ayanna Pegues scored a career-high 17 points for Methodist, and Jackie Lyles added 14 points, six rebounds and four steals. Maya Banks totaled 11 points, six boards and five steals, and Alexis Wallace had nine points and eight rebounds.
 
Prater led the Hawks with 13 points, and Tan Munford grabbed a game-best 13 rebounds in addition to three steals. Pat Pickens had eight points and eight boards.
 
Next up for the Monarchs will be a road game on Friday evening against Covenant. The opening tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
