LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Methodist women's basketball team dropped a 71-48 contest at Washington and Lee on Sunday afternoon.

The Generals (2-0) limited Methodist (0-2) to 18 second-half points on 7-of-26 shooting to rally from a 30-25 deficit at the half. The Monarchs finished 33.3 percent from the field (16-48), while W&L shot 47.5 percent (28-59) for the game.

In the first half, the Monarchs opened up an early six-point lead (9-3) as
Maria Jones knocked down a jumper at the 15:08 mark. The Generals came back and tied the game at 11-11 with 10:43 to play in the opening stanza as Annie Gauf hit a jump shot, and W&L took a two-point lead (13-11) on Shelbi Hendricks' layup roughly 30 seconds later.

The Monarchs then used a 19-10 scoring run to assume a 30-23 lead on
Jasmine Canady's three pointer with just under a minute to play in the first half before Hendricks converted a layup as the first half buzzer sounded for the 30-25 score at intermission.

In the second half, the two teams traded buckets to begin the period and the score stood at 36-36 with 14:29 on the clock. However, the Generals pushed out to a 53-40 lead by the 7:17 mark, and continued to pull away down the stretch.

Sydney Bryan led MU with 10 points, and
Kayla Pless and
Alexis Wallace scored nine points apiece.
Ayanna Pegues totaled seven points and five rebounds, and Canady had six points, five assist and three boards.

For Washington and Lee, Emily Perszyk led the way with a game-high 24 points, connecting on 6-of-8 three pointers. Jackie Clifford and Hendricks each had 10 points, and Hendricks added eight rebounds.

Methodist will return to the court on Friday when they play at Randolph-Macon beginning at 6:00 pm.
