MARTINSVILLE, Va. --
Victoria Martins goal just over two minutes into overtime lifted the third-seeded Methodist women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over No. 7 N.C. Wesleyan in the semifinal round of the USA South Championships at the Smith River Sports Complex.
Â
Martins' long-range shot in the first extra session was misplayed by N.C. Wesleyan goalkeeper Sarah Hovis who saw the ball trickle over the end line for the game-winning goal.
Â
Deycasha Miller put the Monarchs up 1-0 at the 9:23 mark of the game with an unassisted goal and it appeared the Monarchs would take that 1-0 lead into the locker room at halftime. However, the Battling Bishops tied the contest at 1-1 when Rebecca Staylor found Jade Gold for the tying tally with just 37 seconds left in the first period.
Â
Taylor Ross made three saves in goal for MU, as the Monarchs held a slight 11-9 edge in shots, including 6-4 in shots on goal. Hovis made four saves for NCWC before the mishap in OT.
Â
With the win, MU improved to 12-5-2 on the season. The Monarchs have won seven straight and are 10-0-2 in their last 12 contests.
Â
Methodist will take on third-seeded Maryville for the USA South Championship on Saturday beginning at 5:00 pm. The Monarchs will be seeking their first tournament title since 2007.
