LAURINBURG, N.C. -- St. Andrews University held off a late Methodist rally in defeating the Monarchs, 50-45, in women's basketball on Friday night.

After falling behind by four points at the half, and trailing by as many as six points in the second half before pulling within one points (42-41) on
Ayanna Pegues' layup with 4:33 left to play. Alana Artis re-established the Knights lead to three points on the ensuing possession, before Pegues answered again with another bucket to make it 44-43 with 3:53 on the clock.

Juliette Love made a layup at the 3:32 mark, and Tyesha McLean split a pair of free throws at the 2:53 mark to push SAU's lead back to four points (47-43). Love then converted a three-point play with 1:47 on the clock to give the Knights a 50-43 lead. The Monarchs missed their final two shots from the floor.
Alexis Wallace hit a pair of free throws for MU (0-5) with 14 seconds on the clock to cap the scoring for both teams.

Pegues led the Monarchs with 12 points and added seven rebounds and four steals. Wallace had 11 points and six rebounds, and
Jalisia Campbell chipped in six points and nine boards. As a team, the Monarchs shot 34.6 percent from the floor, and hit just 1-of-13 three-point attempts. MU also pulled down 38 rebounds and 12 steals.

Love and Artis scored 10 points apiece for St. Andrews. Ashley Jennings had seven rebounds, and McLean and Kayla Johnson each had four assists.

The Monarchs are back on the court on Sunday when they travel to Virginia Wesleyan for a 4:00 pm contest.
