Mike Major had a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds, but Methodist's men's basketball team fell, 72-64, to Guilford on Wednesday evening at the March F. Riddle Center.

The Monarchs (2-4) could not overcome some hot shooting from the Quakers (5-1) in dropping their second straight. Guilford connected on 9-of-23 three point attempts (.391), including 7-of-14 in the first half as it built an eight-point lead (35-27) by the break.

Trever Hyatt hit a pair of three pointers in the opening minutes as Guilford raced out to a 12-3 lead by the 15:20 mark. The Monarchs came storming back, and tied the game at used a 13-4 run to tie the game at 16-16 on
Davion Ayabarreno's layup with 10:43 on the clock. MU took its only lead of the game (20-18) a few minutes later as Major scored from close range at the 7:28 mark.

The lead was short lived as a three-pointer by Matt McCarthy on the ensuing possession gave GC a 21-20 lead, and the Quakers outscored MU, 14-7, down the stretch to take the aforementioned 35-27 lead into the break. In addition to its hot shooting from outside in the first half, Guilford outrebounded the Monarchs, 21-15, in the first 20 minutes.

The Monarchs opened the second half on a 10-2 scoring run to tie the game at 37-37.
Desmond Parker, who scored six points during the run, knotted the game with a layup at the 16:24 mark prompting a timeout from Guilford. Out of the stoppage, Jonny Rice converted a three-point play for a 40-37 lead with 15:49 to play, and the Quakers stretched their lead to seven points (47-40) on Will Freeman's layup at the 12:20 mark.

Methodist was able to trim its deficit to three points (60-57) by the 3:56 mark on a Major layup, but the Monarchs converted just two of their final eight shots from the field, including six straight misses, to close out the game.

Major added four steals and three assists in a solid all around effort.
Tabias Hilliard added 10 points and four assists without a turnover.
Brandon Monk chipped in nine points in his first game back from injury, and
Desmond Parker and Ayabarreno each had eight points.

McCarthy led all scorers with 20 points, on 6-of-14 shooting, including 5-o-13 from beyond the arc. Rice had a double-double of 14 points and 16 rebounds, and Hyatt and Freeman each finished with 10 points.

Methodist returns to the court on Dec. 12 at Randolph beginning at 7:00 pm.
