Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Methodist Men's Basketball Downs Connecticut College, 76-59

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Brandon Monk and Tabias Hilliard led four Methodist players in double figures with 14 points apiece and the Methodist men's basketball team snapped a five-game skid with a 76-59 win over Connecticut College on Tuesday afternoon at the March F. Riddle Center.

The Monarchs (3-6) held the Camels to 33.8 percent shooting on the night, in their best defensive showing of the season. In addition to Hilliard and Monk, Mike Major and T.J. Gill added 11 points apiece.

Trailing by two points (15-13) with just under 10 minutes to play in the first half, the Monarchs used a 15-2 run to take a 28-17 lead, one that they would not relinquish, at the 4:40 mark. Monk keyed the run with a layup, and Hilliard followed with a triple for an 18-15 lead. Blake Davis connected from deep off a feed from Hilliard for a 21-15 lead, and Joey Horne's triple with 4:40 on the clock gave MU an 11-point lead (28-17). During the run, Methodist shot 5-of-9 from the field and limited Connecticut (5-4) to 1-of-7 shooting.

After taking a 10-point lead (36-26) into the break, Methodist saw its advantage shrink to five points (42-37) just over five minutes into the second period after a 7-0 run by the Camels. MU answered with a brief 6-0 spurt, with three points apiece from Hilliard and Gill, to extend its lead to 11 points (48-37) by the 13:18 mark.

Connecticut got back within single digits on its next possession as Bryan Gross hit a short jumper, but Hilliard answered with a pair of free throws and never led by fewer than 10 points the rest of the way.

As a team, Methodist shot 48.3 percent from the field (28-58) and hit on 8-of-16 three-point attempts after shooting just 1-of-10 in Sunday's loss to UW-Platteville. The Monarchs also held a 45-40 edge in rebounding and were 12-of-16 from the line (.750), while Connecticut shot just 40.9 percent (9-22) from the charity stripe.

Chris Vinson added a team-best seven rebounds, and Monk and Major had six and five boards, respectively. Hilliard had four assists without a turnover and Jackson Whitley had three blocks.

For Connecticut, Zuri Pavlin had 16 points and eight rebounds, and Isaiah Robinson added nine points and nine boards. Alex Tonhazy scored eight points off the bench and Austin Brown added eight rebounds.

The Monarchs are back in action on Saturday at LaGrange.
