Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. - Methodist had four players finish in double figures, but came up short against Greensboro, 72-69, on Sunday afternoon at Hanes Gym.
Trailing by five at intermission (39-34), the Monarchs (12-9, 8-7 USA South) would steadily work their way back into the game and led by eight points (54-46) near the 11:30 mark in the second half. During this eight-plus-minute span, Methodist outscored the Pride (16-5, 12-3 USA South) by a 17-7 margin, including seven unanswered points at one point.
In this spurt, the Monarchs shot 6-of-15 from the floor (.400), but hit a trio of long-range field-goals, as
Maya Banks made one while
Alexis Wallace had the final two three-pointers. In comparison, Greensboro shot 3-of-15 from the field (.200) during this stretch as it went from up by five points to trailing by eight.
The Pride would rally, however, as they went on a 14-6 run to reclaim the lead, 60-58, on a Marla Crawford three-pointer with 5:33 remaining in regulation. During this span of roughly six minutes, Greensboro shot only 5-of-12 from the floor (.417), but capitalized on six Methodist turnovers. Following Crawford's trey, the Pride would never trail again.
The Monarchs shot 44.8 percent from the floor (26-58) overall, but dropped from a 52.0 percent success rate (13-25) in the opening half to a 39.4 percent mark (13-33) in the final period. The Pride also followed a similar trend as they hit 15-of-28 field-goal attempts (.536) in the first half but only 10-of-31 (.323) in the second half. Greensboro held a slim 72-69 edge in total rebounds.
Ayanna Pegues led Methodist with 14 points, and Wallace had 12 points and five rebounds.
Monique Lofton added 11 points and four rebounds, and
Chandler Christensen had 12 points.
Shanita Hampton scored a game-high 22 points for the Pride, and Chevena Pickard tacked on 18 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals.
The Monarchs will be back in action on Tuesday at William Peace with tipoff scheduled for 5:30 pm.
