MU Women's Soccer Downs Covenant, 2-0, in USA South Quarterfinals

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The fourth-seeded Methodist women's soccer team defeated the No. 5 seed, Covenant, 2-0 in the quarterfinal round of the USA South Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the Monarch Soccer Stadium.

Methodist, now 12-4-3 on the season, used two goals within the first eight minutes of play to dispatch the Scots, who finish their season at 10-5-1.


The Monarchs struck early at the 5:43 mark as Taylor Cavazos fed Deycasha Miller a through ball from the middle, and the Monarchs gained a 1-0 lead.

Capri Clark made it a 2-0 game in MU's favor at the 7:11 mark, heading in a high cross from Kortney Maggard, who sent it to the middle from the far right side of the box.

Overall, the Green and Gold outshot the visiting Scots, 23-4, and seven shots on frame to their zero. Taylor Ross improved to 11-6 on the season after not being pressured to make any saves. Rachel Lemay was handed the loss, making five saves on the day.

The Monarchs will compete in the semifinal match against the host Meredith Avenging Angels on Friday, Nov. 6 at 11:30 am.
