Randolph Edges MU, 71-67 (OT), in Men's Hoops

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Randolph's Evan Horn hit a game-tying three with eight seconds left in regulation, and the WildCats outscored Methodist 7-1 over the final 1:35 in overtime as Randolph earned a 71-67 win over the Methodist men's basketball team on Sunday afternoon at the Riddle Center.
 
The WildCats' rally spoiled a 24-point, 8-rebound performance from MU's Brandon Monk. He hit on 7-of-12 shots from the floor, including 3-of-4 three pointers, and was 7-of-8 from the line.
 
Horn's three capped a 9-2 run for Randolph (1-0) to close out regulation after Mike Major had given the Monarchs (1-1) a 56-49 lead with a free throw at the 1:57 mark. The WildCats came back with six straight points, including a three-point play by Jason Eddie, to pull within one (56-55) with 43 seconds to play. Tabias Hilliard made a pair of free throws at the 29 second mark for a three-point edge (58-55), but on Eddie was able to get in the lane and kick to Horn on Randolph's final possession to tie the game.

In overtime, Zach Desgain gave RC a 62-58 lead with a short jumper before Davis converted a three-point play to make it 62-61 with 3:12 on the clock. Four straight points from Mike Major pushed the Monarchs in front, 65-64, with 1:35 on the clock, but five straight free throws from the WildCats gave Randolph back the lead (69-65) with 11 seconds to play.
 
Hilliard pulled MU within two with a quick layup on the next possession, but Seth Wimbish sealed the win with a pair of shots from the line for a 71-67 lead and seven seconds to play.
 
Randolph led by as many as nine points (23-14) in the first half and took a five-point edge (28-23) into the break. The Monarchs quickly cut into RC's lead and took a 34-32 lead on Monk's three with 13:21 left in regulation. An 11-3 run by the Green and Gold, capped by a pair of free throws by Monk gave the Monarchs a 52-45 lead with 3:49 to play before Randolph began its comeback bid.
 
Both teams struggled shooting the ball, Methodist hitting on 33.3 percent (19-57) of its field goal attempts, and Randolph shooting 38.7 percent (25-62) for the game. The WildCats held a 48-35 edge on the glass.
 
In addition to Monk's big game, Major finished with 10 points and eight rebounds, and Hilliard had nine points and seven assists.  Davis added eight points, and Jackson Whitley had six points, four boards and three blocks.
 
Desgain led Randolph with 21 points and added five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Josh Freund had a double-double of 13 points and 11 boards, while Wimbish totaled 14 points off the bench.
 
Methodist is back in action on Friday at Marietta beginning at 8:00 pm.
