LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Methodist men's basketball team rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to force overtime, but Sewanee's Jorden Williams hit a go-ahead jumper with three seconds to play in overtime to lift the Tigers to a 68-67 win in the consolation game of the W&L Holiday Tournament.
Â
Brandon Monk and
Tabias Hilliard led the Monarchs with 19 and 17 points, respectively. Hilliard also had nine assists. Williams led the Tigers with 34 points, including 8-of-11 shooting from long range.
Â
After falling behind by 11 points at the break (39-28), the Monarchs (4-8) kept Sewanee (6-4) within sight in the second half, before using a late surge to force overtime. Trailing 59-52 with 4:20 left to play, the Monarchs closed the game on a 9-2 run.
Â
Monk started the run with a bucket and
Davion Ayabarreno added a pair of free throws to make it 59-56. A Sewanee bucket restored a five-point advantage, but Monk answered with a three pointer to pull MU within two points. Following a Sewanee turnover, Methodist missed a potential game-tying jumper, but
Jackson Whitley was able to secure the offensive rebound. Following an MU timeout with 18 seconds to play, Hilliard got open for the game-tying layup with four seconds to play.
Â
In the extra session, Methodist scored the first four points for a 65-61 lead. The Tigers pulled to within 65-64, but MU's
Blake Davis made it 67-64 with a jumper and 28 seconds on the clock. Sewanee's Brody Stone made it a one-point game once again (67-66) with 18 seconds to play.
Â
The Monarchs had a chance to extend their lead, but a missed free throw on the front end of a one-and-one gave the ball back to the Tigers, who picked up the win on Williams' late jumper.
Â
Sewanee outshot Methodist 44.6 percent to 42.1 percent, and held a 39-28 edge on the glass. The Monarchs committed just nine turnovers to 16 for the Tigers.
Â
Davis added 10 points for the Monarchs. Whitley had six points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots.
Â
In addition to Williams' 34 point's, Stone finished with 10, and Seth Brown and Keshonn Carter had eight apiece. Stone led the Tigers with seven rebounds, and Clay Born added four assists.
Â
Methodist is back in action on Jan. 6 when it hosts Ferrum at 7:30 pm.
