FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Lynchburg swept a softball doubleheader from Methodist at Price Field on Saturday afternoon. The Hornets took game one, 7-0, and earned a 10-3 win in the nightcap.
 
In the opener, Hope Johnson and Elizabeth Fioretti limited the Monarchs to two hits in 7.0 innings. Each pitcher gave up one hit, with Johnson striking out three in 5.0 innings, while Fioretti tossed 2.0 shutout innings with one strikeout.
 
Nicole Heinrich took the loss in the circle for the Monarchs. She pitched 5.1 innings and gave up five runs (4 ER) on six hits and three walks with three strikeouts.
 
The Hornets struck for two runs in the top of the first inning, including a solo home run by Amber Ingram. LC did not score again until the fifth, when Ingram came home on a wild pitch for a 3-0 lead. Lynchburg took advantage of some MU wildness in the circle to put the game away in the sixth inning. Three walks in the inning and an error led to four runs crossing home plate for the final margin of 7-0.
 
Sarah Stapleton and Alanna Anderson each singled to account for the two Monarch hits. Anderson also added a stolen base.
 
In the nightcap, LC raced out to a 7-1 lead entering the bottom of the third inning. The Monarchs added a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to make it 7-3, but could not pull any closer.
 
After the Hornets took a 2-0 lead in the first, MU got a run back in the bottom of the frame on Kristen Bailly's RBI single that plated Stapleton for a 2-1 game.
 
Ingram drove in two runs in the second inning with a single to make it 4-1, and in the third Skylar Seals hit a three-run homer for a 7-1 lead. MU got a pair of runs back on Ally Griffin's two-run single to make it 7-3.
 
Kirsten Copley picked up the win for LC. She allowed three runs on nine hits without a walk while striking out two in 5.0 innings. Monica Revels took the loss. She surrendered seven runs (5 ER) on nine hits in 2.2 innings.
 
Lindsay Tippett was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles for the Monarchs, and Bailly was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Stapleton was 1-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.
 
Ingram finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored, and Jessi Hall had a pair of base hits and scored three times.
 
Methodist plays next Saturday at Guilford beginning at 1:00 pm.
