Methodist Women's Hoops Topples Mary Baldwin, 76-35

STAUNTON, Va. -- The Methodist women's basketball team closed out the regular season on Sunday afternoon with a 76-35 win at Mary Baldwin.

Alexis Wallace had a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Monarchs, who rallied from a sluggish start to run away from the Fighting Squirrels.

A three pointer by MBC's Kaybria Johnson trimmed and early MU lead to just six points (19-13) with 7:14 on the clock. From there, MU closed the first period on a 14-0 run to take a 33-13 lead into halftime. Five different players scored for the Green and Gold during the burst.

The second half started much the same way the first half ended. Methodist scored each of the period's first 10 points in pushing its lead to 43-13 with 16:21 left in the game and the Monarchs coasted from there.

Methodist held MBC to 23.3 percent shooting (14-60) and the Fighting Squirrels had more turnovers (29) than made field goals (14). The Monarchs also boasted a 58-40 edge in rebounding.

Sydney Bryan scored a team-best 12 points, and Jasmine Canady and Jalisia Campbell each had 11. Ayanna Pegues had eight points, six rebounds, and three steals.

Johnson paced MBC with 12 points, but shot 4-of-19 from the floor and 1-of-10 from long range. Teanna Peavy had eight points and 10 rebounds, and Tejava Ivory netted eight points and six boards.

The Monarchs open play in the USA South Tournament on Thursday when they take on Greensboro at 3:00 pm. All games will be contested at Maryville College in Maryville, Tenn.
