DEMOREST, Ga. -- Piedmont swept a softball doubleheader from Methodist on Sunday afternoon. The Lions posted a pair of five-inning wins, 9-0 in the first game, and 9-1 in the second.
Methodist was limited to just two hits in total on the day as Piedmont pitching kept the MU offense in check. In game one, the Lions scored four runs in the third inning and closed out the game with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Nicole Heinrich took the loss (3-3) in the circle. She allowed four runs on eight hits and three walks in 2.2 innings.
Jordan Pietrolaj gave up five runs on four hits and three walks in 2.0 innings. Sarah Walker earned the win, she allowed just one hit and one walk with five strikeouts in 5.0 innings.
Kelsey Harrington had the lone hit for the Monarchs. Abby Smith was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run scored for Piedmont. Beck Ross and Jessica Bagwell each drove in two runs, and Allison Vaughn scored twice.
Despite recording only hit in the nightcap, the Monarchs actually struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning when
Ally Griffin scored on a Lion error. Piedmont answered with eight runs in the bottom of the frame however, including a three-run home run from Bagwell, to take an 8-1 lead.
Monica Revels took the loss, allowing eight runs (5 ER) on eight hits with one strikeout in 1.2 innings.
Christine Bowman pitched the final 3.0 innings and allowed one run on two hits with a strikeout.
The Green and Gold return to action on Wednesday when they host N.C. Wesleyan beginning at 2:00 pm.
