FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Methodist baseball team exploded in the fifth inning, including a grand slam by Ray Lanners, to rout the visiting Pacers of William Peace, 16-2, in seven innings on Wednesday night. The win improves MU to 13-7 (7-5 USAS) on the season, while WPU falls to 1-15 (1-13 USAS).
The Pacers were the first to get on the board in the top of the first, grabbing a 1-0 lead after Jacob Ennis singled down the right field line to score Trey Hathaway, who drew a lead-off walk.
The Monarchs responded with a run in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at 1-1 after a RBI single by Matt Jack scored Chris Power.
A sacrifice fly by Steven Kirby in the bottom of the third drove in Power to give the Monarchs the lead, 2-1, and two errors in the same play in the fourth scored three more for the Green and Gold for a 5-1 advantage.
Nick Cole singled home Greg Chauvin in the top of the fifth to make it a 5-2 game in Methodist's favor, and that would be the last time the Pacer's would score.
Methodist's bats caught on fire in the fifth inning, registering 11 runs on eight hits, using 10 different men. Alex Rodriguez led off with a triple to center field and Kirby drove him home on an infield single, before advancing to second on an error. A fly out by Jack pushed Kirby to third a single by Lanners would score him to push the Monarchs ahead 7-2. Back-to-back singles by Lucas Scott and Pete Wildeboer scored Lanners and a wild pitch advanced the two Monarchs. After Stephen Nalls walked, Cody Molosky reached on a fielder's choice to score Scott and a balk by WPU's Coleman Greene scored Wildeboer to make it 10-2. Molosky stole third, and after a walk by Power, an error by the Pacers on Rodriguez's hit would score him. Kirby hit the next pitch up the middle for a base hit RBI, scoring Power. With two outs and the bases loaded, Lanners launched his first home run of the 2015 season over the wall in right-field, a no-doubter grand slam that gave the Green and Gold a 16-2 lead.
The USA South Player of the Week, Lanners, finished 3-for-5 with five RBI, three runs scored and drew one walk. Kirby was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two scored runs, while Wildeboer went 2-for-3 with a scored run. Molosky added two RBI and Rodriguez chipped in two runs scored.
Methodist's starting pitcher, Daniel Royer (1-0), got the win, pitching the first 3.0 innings and allowing one run and two hits. Michael Inman stepped in as relief, giving up one run (0 ER) and two hits with five strikeouts in his 3.0 innings on the mound. Madison Cook also saw the mound for the first time this season, and pitched the final 1.0 innings and allowed no hits with two strikeouts.
Ennis was 1-for-3 with an RBI for WPU, while Cole finished 1-for-2 with one RBI. Chauvin and Hathaway each added a scored run apiece.
Green (0-3) took the loss, allowing all 16 runs (8 ER) on 11 hits in the first 5.0 innings, walking five and striking out one.
The Monarchs will play at home again on Wednesday, this time against Tufts, with the first pitch scheduled for4:00 pm.
