Methodist Rallies to Sweep Baseball Doubleheader From Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Methodist swept a baseball doubleheader from Greensboro on Saturday afternoon at Leonard Park.

The Monarchs outslugged Greensboro 20-14 in the first game of Saturday's twinbill, and claimed a 13-8 win before coming through in extra inning for a 7-6, 10-inning win in game two.

Methodist burst out of the gates in the top of the fourth, grabbing an early 4-0 lead. Back-to-back singles by Alex Rodriguez and Steven Kirby put runners on the corners and after the Pride held off Rodriguez' scoring run, Ray Lanners singled to drive Kirby home. A single by Lucas Scott scored Matt Jack, who reached on a fielder's choice, and a throwing error by Greensboro scored Lanners to push the Monarchs ahead, 3-0. Pete Wildeboer ended the frame's scoring with a single to plate Scott.

A sacrifice fly to right field by Kirby and two consecutive errors by the Pride in the top of the second scored three for the Green and Gold, bringing the score to 7-0 in Methodist's favor.

Greensboro made it on the board in the bottom half of the frame, when Rhett Martin singled to left field to score Andrew Toney, who led off with a double.

RBI singles by Cody Molosky in the third and Chris Power in the fifth pushed the Monarchs ahead, 9-1, and then 10-2 after GC's pitcher balked and moved Jack home.

The Pride added three in the bottom of the sixth, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Brian Robbett and a two-RBI base knock to right center by Kyle Willard, cutting the deficit to five runs, 10-5.

Methodist loaded the bases with the first three batters in the top of the ninth, and a single to right field by Molosky scored two to give MU a 12-5 advantage. A single by Rodriguez put the Monarchs in scoring position and a double by Kirby plated Molosky for Methodist's final run of the game.

Greensboro attempted to rally in the bottom of the ninth, but fell short, scoring just four runs on singles by Martin and Cody York and a ground out by Gwynn Thompson.

Molosky went 4-for-5 with three RBI and runs scored, adding two stolen bases while Wildeboer finished 3-for-5 with two scored runs and one RBI. Rodriguez was 3-for-5 with one scored run and Kirby added two RBI.
