ASHLAND, Va. – The Methodist softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to host Randolph Macon on Wednesday afternoon. The results move MU's season mark to 10-12 while the Yellow Jackets go to 9-5.
Game 1 – R-MC 2, MU 0 Randolph-Macon's starting pitcher, Nelda Bagley (6-1), tossed a five-hit shutout in game one, earning the win.
The Yellow Jackets used the long ball for their offense, scoring both of their runs off home runs by Sharese Jarvis in the first and Sierra Ford in the third.
Methodist had a chance to score in the fourth inning with the bases loaded, but R-MC's defense was able to catch
Kristen Bailly at second after being hit by a pitch to end the inning.
Sarah Stapleton and
Heather Williams both went 2-for-3 and
Alanna Anderson finished 1-for-3.
Monica Revels (3-4) took the loss, allowing two runs on seven hits in 4.0 innings on the mound.
Brittany Miller pitched a perfect 2.0 innings in relief.
Jarvis went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored and Madison Gilman added two hits from her three at bats.
Game 2 – R-MC 6, MU 0 In the nightcap, R-MC's Katie Lockett drove in three to lead the R-MC offense. After the Yellow Jackets scored in the first, Lockett delivered a two-run single in the second to give the home team a 3-0 advantage. Lockett drove in her third run in a three-run sixth.
Pitching was strong in the second game as well, as Kelsey McLaughlin (2-3) limited the Monarchs to just five hits in seven scoreless innings, striking out three, to grab the win.
Methodist had a chance to score in the seventh, when singles by
Hannah Fickle and
Cayley Oldham put the Monarchs in scoring position, but R-MC's defense was able to end the inning without any runs scored.
Williams was a perfect 2-for2 and Stapleton was 1-for-4.
Addi Johnson had two hits and two RBI, while Amanda Sopko went 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Christine Bowman was saddled with the loss after pitching the first 2.0 innings, allowing three runs (2 ER) on four hits with two strikeouts.
Nicole Heinrich saw the mound for 4.0 innings and allowed three runs on five hits.
Methodist travels to Lookout Mountain, Ga. on Friday to play in a doubleheader against host Covenant College beginning at 2:00 p.m.
