Methodist Softball Runs Past Maryville; 11-1, 11-2

MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- A pair of strong pitching performances aided by a an offensive outburst led to the Methodist softball team sweeping a doubleheader from Maryville in convincing fashion. MU won the opener 11-1 in five innings before posting an 11-2 win in the nightcap.
 
In the opener, Emily Hester limited the Scots to one run on five with a pair of walks and three strikeouts in improving to 4-2 on the year. She was backed by an MU offense that pounded out 15 hits off of Kayla Aloisi, who pitched all 5.0 innings for Maryville. She gave up 11 runs (10 ER) and walked one.
 
The game was scoreless until the third inning when Heather Williams drove in the Green and Gold's first run with a double to left center. Lindsay Tippett provided the biggest bang with a three-run homer, her seventh of the year, to left center as well as the Monarchs took a 4-0 lead.
 
Maryville scratched across a run in the bottom of the third to make it 4-1, but it was all MU from there. Allyson Aycock and Tippett each had RBI singles in the fourth, and Kelsey Harrington added a sacrifice fly to make it 7-1. Still in the fourth inning, Ally Griffin singled in a run, as did Kristen Bailly for a 9-1 game, and the Monarchs capped their scoring in the frame on Brittany Miller's ball to left field that resulted in an error and allowed Griffin to score to make it 10-1
 
Williams capped the scoring in the fifth inning with another RBI double that allowed Krista Zentner to cross the plate.
 
Tippett was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in four with one run scored. Williams finished 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and two runs. Aycock was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Griffin finished with a pair of hits in three at bats with a run and an RBI. Zentner scored three times for Methodist.
 
In game two, it was MU's Monica Revels who shut down the Scots picked up the win. She allowed two runs on four hits and a walk with one strikeout in 4.0 innings. Jordan Pietrolaj pitched a scoreless inning in relief, working around one hit and striking out one.
 
The Monarchs wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard, tallying four runs in the top of the first inning. Tippett drove in Sarah Stapleton with a single to center, and Williams scored on an MC error for a 2-0 lead. Bailly added an RBI single and Aycock drove in another run with a fielder's choice to make it 4-0.
 
Maryville made it 4-1 in the bottom of the frame, but the Monarchs went back to work in the second. Tippett added another RBI base hit, and Griffin doubled home Tippett to make it 6-1. In the third inning, Miller reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Aycock to score and make it a 7-1 ballgame.
 
The Scots added another run in the third inning to cut into MU's lead and make it 7-2, but the Monarchs put the game away with four runs in the fourth. Bailly added another RBI single, Kirsten Markow had a two-run double and Tippett reached on a fielding error that allowed Markow to score for the final 11-2 margin.
 
Stapleton was a perfect 3-for-3 in the second game and scored twice. Tippett was 2-for-4 with three runs driven in and a run scored, and Bailly was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Aycock finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs.
 
Methodist will play host to Salem on Monday beginning at 4:00 pm.
