MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Methodist baseball team could manage just two runs on seven hits against Huntingdon on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Hawks 5-2 in the series finale.
Alex Rodriguez led the top of the first inning off with a walk and then advanced to second on a passed ball. A fly out by Matt Jack pushed Rodriguez to third and the Monarchs gained a 1-0 lead on the next play as Rodriguez stole home.
Huntingdon responded in the bottom of the frame with three runs after back-to-back walks and Jordan Freeman getting hit by a pitch. A single by Anthony Spivey scored two to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead and Freeman scored two batters later to push their lead to 3-1.
With two outs in the top of the third, Steven Kirby and Jack were both put on base after being hit by pitches and a single up the middle by Stephen Nalls advanced the runners but an error by the Hawks scored Kirby to cut the deficit to just one run at 3-2 in Huntingdon's favor.
The Hawks tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth when Mason Throneberry singled to left center and then stole second and scored on the next play after back-to-back errors by Methodist.
A homerun by Freeman in the fifth inning served as the last run of the game for both teams, and Huntingdon pushed its lead to 5-2.
Methodist had a chance to score in the bottom of the seventh with Davis Cass at third after reaching on an error, but Jack grounded into a double play to end the inning.
Jared Gonzalez (3-0) was handed the win after tossing 6.0 innings and allowing two runs and five hits with five strike outs. Throneberry was given the save after pitching 2.0 innings in relief and allowing no runs and just one hit.
Michael Inman took the loss for Methodist after pitching 5.0 innings and giving up five runs and five hits. Daniel Royer also took the mound for 3.0 innings and allowed two hits.
On the day, Pete WIldeboer was 3-for-3 with one walk and Nalls was 1-for-3 with one RBI.
For HC, Spivey finished 1-for-4 with two RBI and Throneberry went 2-for-4 and one scored run.
Methodist returns to Armstrong-Shelley Field on Tuesday as the host Emory and Henry College with the first pitch scheduled for 6:00 pm.
