ZEBULON, N.C. – The 22nd-ranked Methodist baseball team grabbed an 8-3 win over N.C. Wesleyan on Friday afternoon, claiming the USA South Spring Sports Festival series after an 11-1 win on Thursday.
The Monarchs (27-8, 20-6) were the first to reach the board as
Steven Kirby singled to right field to score
Chris Power, who led off with a double.
After a scoreless second inning, the Green and Gold grabbed a 3-0 lead after scoring on a two-run base knock to right center by
Matt Jack.
The Battling Bishops (10-27, 8-21) tallied its first run in the top of the sixth on a Brad Guengerich ground out to second, plating J Lovett.
Methodist responded in the home half of the frame, tallying three runs on two hits and an error. Jack drew a lead-off walk and a single by
Ray Lanners and a throwing error by
Pete Wildeboer's sacrifice bunt allowed Jack to score and the Monarchs to have runners on second and third with no outs.
Stephen Nalls hammered a two-run double to right center to score Lanners and Wildeboer, giving MU a 6-1 advantage.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Jack singled through the left side and the next batter, Lanners, plated him with a double to left center. A double by Wildeboer scored Lanners, and the Monarchs went ahead, 8-1.
N.C. Wesleyan added the final two runs of the game in the eighth, scoring on a double by J.J. Rodriguez and a single by Marcus Kornegay, making it an 8-3 final score in Methodist's favor.
Jack was 2-for-2 on Friday, tallying two RBI and two scored runs while Lanners was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two scored runs. Nalls was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Wildeboer finished 1-for-3 with and RBI and scored run.
Starting pitcher
Travis Johnson (7-1) earned the win for Methodist, pitching a total of 7.0 innings and allowing three runs (2 ER) on nine hits with seven strikeouts and just one walk.
Rett Lee tossed the final 2.0 innings perfectly, striking out two.
For N.C. Wesleyan, Rodriguez was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored and Marcus Kornegay was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Ryan Grant (1-6) was handed the loss, tossing the first 5.0 innings and allowing six runs (5 ER) on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
The Monarchs and the Bishops will conclude the three-game series on Saturday at Fleming Stadium with a single game beginning at 2:30 pm.
