MU Men's Basketball Falls at Covenant, 85-57

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. — Covenant hit 11 three pointers and held the Methodist men's basketball team to 6-of-22 shooting in posting an 85-57 win on Saturday at the Barnes PE Center.

Despite shooting 58.3 percent (14-24) from the floor in the first 20 minutes, the Monarchs (7-12, 3-5 USA South) found themselves trailing by 13 (44-31) at the break. Covenant (11-7, 6-2 USA South) shot just 44.4 percent (16-36) in the first half, but that was buoyed by eight three pointers on 17 attempts (.471). Covenant also forced 11 first-half turnovers and out rebounded the Monarchs, 20-11.

A three pointer by Brandon Monk less than three minutes into the second half pulled the Monarchs to within 10 points (49-39), but Pato Twagirayezu scored for the Scots to make it 51-39 and Covenant would lead by no fewer than 12 points the rest of the way.

The Monarchs shot 43.5 percent for the game (20-46), and 76.5 percent from the line (13-17). Covenant finished at 47.9 percent (35-73) for the game, including 11-of-30 (.367) from beyond the arc. The Scots out rebounded the Monarchs, 41-25, and committed 10 turnovers to MU's 19.

Monk led the Monarchs with 13 points, and Mike Major and Davion Ayabarreno each chipped in nine. Major added six rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals, while Jackson Whitley scored seven points and blocked four shots.

TJ Cox led the Scots with 15 points, and Ben Phelps added 14. Cox also had a team-best seven rebounds.

The Monarchs host Greensboro next Saturday beginning at 4:00 pm.
