Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late Bucket Lifts Shenandoah Past Monarchs, 68-67

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Malcolm Clark's layup with just over a second remaining broke a 66-66 tie and helped Shenandoah escape with a 68-67 win over the Methodist men's basketball team on Wednesday afternoon at the Riddle Center.

Methodist had a shot to tie the contest following Clark's go-ahead layup as Bryan Rouse drew a foul on the inbounds pass and was sent to the line for a one-and-one with 0.9 seconds remaining. Rouse converted the first charity toss, but was off the mark on the second and Clark secured the rebound and the win for the Hornets (3-1). Methodist slipped to 0-4 on the year.

The game's dramatic final moments came after Mu erased a 12-point deficit (50-38) with 11:08 to play to take a 53-52 lead on Jackson Whitley's putback dunk off an errant Blake Davis layup with 6:14 on the clock. Whitley scored eight of his 10 points during the 15-2 burst.

MU would go up by as many as six points (64-58) with 2:36 on the clock, but a 7-0 run from Shenandoah pushed the visitors back in front, 65-64 with one minute left. Jalyn Jarrett split a pair of free throws for Shenandoah with 32 seconds to play to make it 66-64, but Davis answered with a jumper for MU at the 19-second mark to tie the game at 66-66.

Methodist shot 38.9 percent (28-72) for the game while Shenandoah finished at 40.7 percent (24-59). The Hornets had a decided edge at the line, attempting 26 free throws and hitting 15 (.577). The Monarchs only made 10 trips to the line where they made good on six attempts. The Hornets had a slight edge on the glass, 46-42, and turned the ball over 16 times to just 12 for the Green and Gold.

Davion Ayabarreno led the Monarchs with 18 points, while Irving Aughburns chipped in 15 and Rouse added 12. Whitley completed his double-double with 18 rebounds and added four blocks and four assists. Rouse and Aughburns each had four assists as well.

Clark led all scorers with 23 pints and added nine boards. Gabriel Gonzalez chipped in 10 points off the bench, and Kaimonne Douglas contributed nine points, six rebounds and three steals.

Methodist will play host to St. Andrews on Monday at 7:00 pm.
