MARYVILLE, Tenn. – The Methodist men's soccer team fell to the No. 1 seed, Maryville, 2-1 in double-overtime of the semifinals of the USA South Tournament on Friday night.
With the loss, the Monarchs end the season with an 8-8-1 overall record. Meanwhile, the Scots move to 17-2 on the season and have now won 13-straight games. Maryville will take on N.C. Wesleyan in the finals of the league tournament tomorrow, beginning at 6 pm.
The two teams combined for 10 shots with only two of the strikes being on goal in the first half. Neither side was able to find the back of the net and the game was scoreless at halftime.
Methodist struck first late in the second half when
Austin Lang posted his fourth goal of the year after taking a shot over the keeper from the top of the box at the 80:04 mark, 1-0. Just a little over two minutes later, John Rakhmonberdiev notched the equalizer with an assist from Tim Bakerin the 83rd minute. The draw held through the end of regulation as the contest entered extra time.
The first 10 minute period elapsed without a goal from either side. In the second overtime, Rakhmonberdiev took possession and rifled a shot past the keeper for the game-winning goal in the 103rd minute.
Goalkeeper
Jonathan Moore (7-6-1) stopped four shots on Friday, while Ryan Jorgensen made three saves in a winning effort.
The Scots held a 21-15 advantage in shots, while also holding a 10-3 edge in corner kicks, including seven in the second half.
