Methodist Falls In OT to Salem in USA South Semifinals, 3-2

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Methodist women's soccer team suffered a 3-2 overtime loss to the No. 1 seed in the West, Salem, in the semifinals of the USA South Tournament played on the campus of Meredith College on Friday afternoon.

The Monarchs, who earned the No. 2 seed in the East, snap a four game winning streak and suffer a loss for the first time since Sept. 25. MU ends the year with a 9-6-2 overall record. Meanwhile, the Spirits improve to 18-1-1 on the year and advance to the championship game of the league tournament against Piedmont, which defeated Meredith in the other semifinal match.

In the first half, Salem scored first when Chaniece Moss posted an unassisted goal, 1-0. Minutes later, the Monarchs tied the game with a penalty kick from Jasmine Newman who tallied her eighth goal of the year, 1-1, at the 37:12 mark. The draw held for the remainder of the half.

The Spirits notched the go-ahead goal in the 55th minute when Jordan Lanier took a pass from Brooke Bukas, 2-1. Salem held on to the lead until late in the 87th minute when Deycasha Miller scored with an assist from Capri Clark, 2-2. Neither side found the back of the net before the end of the period.

During the 96th minute, Jordan Lanier notched her 10th goal of the season with the game-winning goal, 3-2.

Goalkeeper Clare Witt (2-1) made four saves while playing the entire game, while Hannah Wagner stopped seven shots on Friday.

The Monarchs held an 18-13 advantage in shots, while also holding a 7-6 edge in corner kicks.
