FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Methodist baseball team dropped the last game of its home-opening series against Emory & Henry, 11-4, on Sunday afternoon at Armstrong-Shelley Field.
Unlike the first two games of the series, the Wasps (1-8) were the first to score, grabbing a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning off a two-out home run by Brandon Lineberry.
The Monarchs (2-1) evened the score in their half of the inning, when a wild pitch by Emory & Henry's starting pitcher, Gavin Felty, scored Pete Wildeboer.
After a scoreless second inning, each team tallied a run in the third inning, knotting the score at 2-2, before the Wasps exploded for four runs in the top of the fourth. After being hit by a pitch, Luke Shepherd advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt but Connor Stevenson and two batters later, scored on an RBI single by Ben Sexton to push the Wasps ahead, 3-2. A single by Daulton Horne scored Sexton and after a Methodist pitching change, Lineberry singled through the left side and an error by Methodist allowed Horne and Macek to score, giving E&H a 6-2 advantage.
Methodist cut the deficit to two, 6-4, in the bottom of the fourth. Alex Rodriguez drew a lead-off walk and a double down the right-field line by Davis Cass advanced him to third. A passed ball allowed Rodriguez to score and after Colin Ford was hit by a pitch, a ground out by Lucas Scott scored Cass.
The Wasps pushed their lead to 10-4 in the top of the sixth, scoring three on a double down the right-field line by pinch-hitter Holden Watkins and an RBI double by Eli Straw. In the seventh, E&H tacked on an insurance run when Lineberry singled to left field, scoring Macek.
Overall, Emory & Henry out-hit Methodist, 15-5. Sexton was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored and Macek was 2-for-4 and scored three times. Lineberry finished 4-for-6 with two RBI and one scored run.
For MU, Stephen Nalls was 1-for-4 with one RBI and Wildeboer was 1-for-4 with two scored runs.
Felty earned the win on the mound for the Wasps, pitching a solid 6.0 innings allowing just five hits and four runs (3 ER) with three strikeouts. Zach Shepherd entered in relief, pitching the final 3.0 innings with no hits allowed and struck out three.
Ross Legget was handed the loss on Sunday, tossing the first 3.2 innings, allowing six runs (4 ER) on six hits with three strikeouts. Nick Norton pitched the next 1.2 innings and allowed four runs on five hits with two strikeouts and Madison Cook finished the inning allowing one hit and tallied one strikeout. Noah Dawson and Aaron O'Neil also entered in relief, pitching 1.0 and 2.0 innings, respectively, allowing a total of three hits and one run.
The Monarchs are back in action on Tuesday as they travel to Greensboro, N.C. to take on host Guilford College at 2:30 pm.
