Methodist Baseball Tops Lynchburg, 4-1

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. --­ The Methodist baseball team finished play in the 2016 Methodist Diamond Invitational on Sunday afternoon, picking up a 4-1 win over Lynchburg College.
 
With the win, the Monarchs now stand 3-2 on the early season while Lynchburg falls to 3-7.
 
The Green and Gold grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when designated hitter Nick Zieniuk singled to shortstop, scoring Alex Rodriguez who led the inning off with a base knock to center field.
 
Lynchburg evened the score, 1-1, in the fourth inning, when a Methodist error allowed Joe Tomasulo to advance to third and another error pushed him home.
 
In the bottom of the sixth, the Monarchs regained the lead, 2-1, when another RBI single by Zieniuk scored Alex Dockery, who singled to shortstop. Pinch hitter Brennan Brown drew a walk, and after Zieniuk's single pushed him to second, a fielder's choice by Lucas Scott advanced him to third. With two outs on the board, an error by the Hornets allowed Brown to score and MU went ahead, 3-1.
 
After a ground out by Ray Lanners in the seventh, Methodist tacked on an insurance run and gained a 4-1 advantage when a double to left center by Davis Cass scored Rodriguez, who singled through the right side.
 
Overall, the Monarchs edged the Hornets 11-8 in total hits. Rodriguez finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Cass was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Dockery and Zieniuk both went 2-for-4 and Dockery scored once while Zieniuk finished with two RBI.
 
On the mound, Travis Johnson picked up his second win of the season, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing one run (0 ER) on six hits with seven strikeouts. Madison Cook pitched 1.0 innings in relief, allowing two hits, and Aaron O'Neil earned the save after pitching the final 1.0 innings and allowing no hits.
 
Tomasulo was 1-for-4 and scored once.
 
Michael Day (0-1) took the loss, tossing for 6.1 innings and allowing four runs (3 ER) on 10 hits with five strikeouts. Logan Woodall entered for the remaining 1.2 innings and allowed one hit with two strikeouts.
 
Methodist will play host to Eastern on Tuesday beginning at 4:00 pm.
