FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- It took the Methodist baseball team just seven innings to complete a series sweep over Greensboro on Saturday afternoon, outscoring the Pride 16-3. The Monarchs (9-7, 2-2) pounded out 13 hits and got a quality start out of
Ross Leggett. The Pride (5-16, 1-4) dropped their 10th straight game to Methodist, managing just six hits against the Monarch pitching staff.
Leggett earned his third win of the year on Saturday, tossing the first 6.0 innings and allowing three runs on six hits with four strikeouts before
Seth Beard entered for the final inning, allowing no hits with one strikeout.
Greensboro jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second, scoring on RBI singles by Daniel Efrid and Braedon Jewett and a ground out by Bram Johnson.
Methodist came within one, 3-2, in the home half of the inning, scoring on an RBI single up the middle by
Colin Ford and a sacrifice fly by
Pete Wildeboer, before knotting the score, 3-3, in the third on a ground out by
Stephen Nalls.
The Monarchs exploded for four runs in the fourth, capitalizing on three Greensboro errors and another RBI base knock by Ford.
After tacking on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to go up 9-3, the Green and Gold piled on seven runs in five hits in the sixth. With one out,
Lucas Scott singled to right center and an error on Nalls' hit pushed him to second. A walk drawn by
Ray Lanners loaded the bases and a sacrifice fly by
Davis Cass and a single up the middle by
Tyler Hardee gave the Monarchs an 11-3 lead before
Colin Ford launched his second collegiate home run over the right field fence, plating Hardee and Lanners. After back-to-back walks by Wildeboer and
Alex Dockery, back-to-back singles by
Alex Rodriguez and Scott scored two more for the final 16-3 score.
On the day, Ford went 3-for-4 with six RBI and two scored runs and Cass was 2-for-3 with two RBI and crossed the plate three times. Rodriguez finished 3-for-5 with two scored runs and an RBI and Hardee was 2-for-2 with an RBI and two scored runs. Scott, Nalls and Wildeboer each added an RBI.
Efrid finished 1-for-2 with an RBI and run scored and Jewett tallied one RBI.
Dustin Minnick (1-3) took the loss for Greensboro, pitching the first 4.0 innings and giving up seven runs (4 ER) on six hits with two strikeouts.
Methodist will play at home again on Tuesday as they host Virginia Wesleyan in a single game beginning at 5:00 p.m.
