RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Methodist softball team split a pair of games with host Meredith College in its first conference doubleheader of 2016. In the first game, the Monarchs picked up a 6-4 win before falling, 8-3, in the nightcap.

With the split, Methodist now stands 3-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play, while Meredtih moves to 7-5 on the season and 1-1 in league play.

In the first game, the Monarchs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Emily Hester drew a lead-off and after a sacrifice bunt by Heather Williams pushed her to second, an error by the Avenging Angels advanced her to third. Two batters later, Kristen Bailly reached on an error, and consequently Hester scored.

In the second inning, Methodist pushed its lead to 4-0 on a walked-in run and an error. Natalie High led off with a single to left field, and a sac bunt by Kelsey Harrington advanced her to second. After Meredith's starting pitcher, Taylor Jackson, struck out Sydney Foland, Ashley Benge made it to first on an error by Jackson, and High moved to third. Back-to-back walks drawn by Hester and Williams loaded the bases and then scored High, and an error by MC's first baseman allowed both Benge and Hester to cross the plate.

Meredith cut the deficit to two runs, 4-2, in the home half of the second, scoring on a lead-off home run to left center by Brittany Bucklin and an RBI single by Bryce Smith, before coming within one run in the third when Courtney Saunders doubled down the left field line to score Kaitlyn Sawyer.

The Green and Gold tallied its last runs of the game in the fourth, going up 5-3 on an error by Meredith, and then 6-3 when Alanna Anderson grounded out to short stop, scoring Benge.

An RBI single by Sawyer in the fourth brought the score to 6-4 in Methodist's favor, and concluded the scoring for either team.

Hester finished 1-for-2 with two runs scored and Benge scored twice. Williams and Anderson each tallied one RBI and High and Foland each scored once.
