MU Softball Finishes 2016 Splitting a Pair of Games With Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Methodist softball team concluded its 2016 season on Wednesday afternoon, splitting a pair of games against Guilford at Haworth Field. The Monarchs won, 8-7, in the first game before falling, 8-2, in the nightcap.
 
Methodist finished the season with an overall record of 9-31 while Guilford continues their season with a record of 22-12.
 
Down 5-1 in the top of the fifth, a grand slam by Kristen Bailly knotted things up, 5-5. Elizabeth Toler led off with single up the middle and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Katelyn Howell. After Toler stole third and back-to-balk walks by Danielle Brendes, Kristen Bailly sent the bomb over the left field fence.
 
Methodist gained the lead, 8-5, in the top of the seventh, when Christine Bowman homered to left field, scoring Hannah Key and Bailly.
 
Guilford attempted to rally, but failed, scoring two runs on fielders' choice by Makayla Carver and an error by the Monarchs to come within one, 8-7.  
 
Bowman finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored and Bailly was 1-for-3. Brendes and Key each drew three walks.
 
Bowman (3-5) also picked up the win for Methodist, pitching all 7.0 innings and allowing seven runs (3 ER) on 11 hits with two strikeouts.
 
In game two, the Monarchs scored its only two runs of the game in the top of the fourth inning on a ground out by Howell and an RBI-single by Brendes.
 
Brendes finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and Kristin Emrich was 1-for-3. Ashely Benge drew two walks.
 
Key (0-2) took the loss for the Green and Gold, tossing the fist 2.0 innings and allowing six runs on eight hits.
