WILSON, N.C. – The fifth-seeded Methodist baseball team fell, 6-3, to the top-seeded Panthers of Ferrum College on Friday afternoon at Fleming Stadium in its second game of the 2016 USA South Baseball Tournament.
With today's loss, the Monarchs finish their play in the tournament and will play again on Wednesday at Lynchburg College before finishing their 2016 season hosting a three-game series against Covenant College next weekend.
The Panthers (27-11) were the first to reach the board in the top of the second when Lane Deaver scored on a wild pitch by Methodist's starting pitcher, Seth Beard, before going ahead, 2-0, in the third when Deaver doubled to right to score Austin Winkles.
Methodist (19-16) scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the third when Alex Rodriguez sent his third home run of the year over the right-field fence to bring the Monarchs within one, 2-1.
Ferrum pulled away in the sixth when Winkles singled up the middle, scoring Clay Massie and Jo Stickney for a 4-1 lead before Lucas Stevens sent an RBI-single up the middle to plate Logan Alger and give the Panthers a 5-1 advantage.
The Green and Gold tallied their last two runs of the game in the bottom of the eighth. With runners in scoring position, Ray Lanners singled through the left side to score Davis Cass and two batters later, Will May sent a base knock to left field, scoring Stephen Nalls to bring the score to 5-3 in Ferrum's favor.
Ty Comer used an RBI-double in the top of the ninth to add an insurance run for Ferrum and serve as the last run for any team for a final score of 6-3.
Rodriguez was 2-for-5 with an RBI and run scored and Lanners was 2-for-2 with one RBI and drew two walks. May was 1-for-1 with an RBI and Nalls finished 1-for-4 and scored once.
Deaver was 4-for-5 for the Panthers with an RBI and scored twice and Stickney and Winkles were both 2-for-5 with a scored run and Winkles added two RBI.
Beard (3-3) took home the loss for Methodist, tossing the first 5.2 innings with five runs allowed on seven hits with four strikeouts. Madison Cook entered for the next 0.2 innings and allowed one hit. Greg Johnson saw the mound for 2.1 innings and gave up one run on three hits with a strikeout before Logan Haines closed out the game allowing no hits.
Ferrum's starting pitcher, Dillon Weaver (7-2), earned the win after pitching the first 5.1 innings and allowing just one run and three hits with one strikeout.
