Monarchs Hold Off Sewanee, 64-60

SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Four MU starters scored in double figures and the Methodist men's basketball team held Sewanee scoreless over the game's final 3:04 in a 64-60 win over the Tigers on Sunday afternoon at Juhan Gymnasium.
 
Davion Ayabarreno led the Monarchs (2-0) with 17 points. Bryan Rouse added 16, and Jackson Whitley and Troynell Reese chipped in 13 and 11, respectively. Whitley also had nine rebounds, while Reese and Dante Jackson each hauled in eight.
 
Jonny Crumly led the Tigers (1-2) with 21 points off the bench, hitting on 6 of 8 three-point attempts, and added 10 boards. Hunter Buescher and Luke Smith scored 12 and 10 points, respectively.
 
Methodist led by as many as seven points (20-13) in the first half, before a 15-2 run by the Tigers over a span of 4:21 gave the home team a 28-22 lead with 2:46 left in the first half. Sewanee would eventually take a 32-27 lead into the locker room.
 
The Sewanee lead briefly reached seven points early in the second half but MU wrestled away the lead (43-42) on a bucket by Ayabarreno with 13:14 to play. Sewanee responded with a 10-2 run to go back up seven points (52-45) with 10:40 showing.
 
Seven straight points by MU, capped by a three-point play by Whitley, tied the contest at 52-52 at the 9:02 mark.
 
As the two teams went back and forth down the stretch, Sewanee took its final lead at 60-59 at the 3:02 mark, but MU quickly got control back as Rouse put MU up 61-60 and the Monarchs forced Sewanee into missing its final five shots from the floor.
 
As a team, Methodist was 26 of 57 (.456) from the floor, but just 5 of 20 (.250) from long range. Sewanee shot 45.1 percent (23-51) as a team, and 35.7 percent (10-28) from beyond the arc. Methodist held a 38-28 edge in rebounding. Sewanee's bench accounted for 27 total points, while MU's reserves scored just five.
 
The Monarchs are back on the court on Tuesday at High Point at 8 pm.
