Guilford Pulls Away From Methodist Late For 79-62 win

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Guilford used a decisive 19-0 run late in the second half to pull away from the Methodist men's basketball team and secure a 79-62 win on Wednesday evening at Ragan-Brown Field House.
 
The Quakers (4-3) used the aforementioned 19-0 run to turn what had been a 52-47 lead with 11:22 to play into a 71-47 edge with 5:26 on the clock. The run began with a Carson Long three-pointer, one of his four on the night, and GC shot 6 of 9 from the floor and 4 of 4 from the line during the run.
 
The Monarch (4-2) offense when cold just as Guilford's heated up. The Green and Gold missed six straight shots and turned the ball over four times as the Quakers distanced themselves.
 
Guilford's run came on the heels of a 16-6 run by the Monarchs that had pulled MU to within five points after trailing by 15 points (46-31) early in the second half.
 
Guilford shot 55.9 percent (33-59) for the game, including 61.3 percent (19-31) in the first half, while holding MU to 40.0 percent (22-55) for the game. Rebounding was even at 31-30 in favor the Quakers, and the Monarchs had 18 turnovers to 14 for Guilford.
 
 Jackson Whitley led the Monarchs with 14 points and added nine rebounds, three blocks and three assists. Bryan Rouse chipped in 14 points as well, and Davion Ayabarreno totaled 12 points after being held scoreless in the first half. Troynell Reese finished with seven points, eight rebounds and a pair of steals.
 
Alston Thompson led the Quakers with 18 points and eight rebounds. Long and Marcus Curry each had 16 points and Kyler Gregory added 12 points. Curry also had seven boards and five steals and Jarrod Rogers dished out eight assists to go with six points and a pair of steals.
 
The Monarchs are off until Dec. 16 at Piedmont beginning at 2 pm.
