FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Methodist softball team was swept by Guilford in a doubleheader at Price Field on Wednesday. The Quakers earned an 8-1 win in the first game and completed the sweep with a 7-2 victory in game two.
In the first game of the day, the Monarchs (0-4) got on the board first.
Samantha Jacobs was hit by a pitch to open the home half of the first inning. She stole second before advancing on a fly to right field.
Chloe Hespeler followed with a one-out RBI double to score Jacobs from third, 1-0.
The Quakers (5-1) sent eight batters to the plate and collected two runs on four hits to take a 2-1 lead in the second inning. GC added another run in the fourth before scoring five runs on five hits in the seventh inning to take an 8-1 lead, which held.
Aly Thomas (0-2) was strapped with the loss after allowing five runs on 15 hits in 6.1 innings. Courtney Lackey (3-0) tossed a complete game with one run on three hits and struck out six batters to receive the win.
Hespeler went 2 for 3 at the plate with an RBI, while
Allyson Aycock tallied the other hit for MU.
In game two, the Quakers plated three runs in the first inning. The visitors were able to add another four runs in the fifth to take a 7-0 lead. In the bottom half of the fifth inning, Hespeler singled to right field and scored Jacobs from third to put MU on the board, 7-1. In the seventh,
Maria Martucci drew a walk before
Savannah Dunn entered as a runner. She advanced to second on a passed ball and went to third after a wild pitch. Dunn then score on an errant throw back to the pitcher, 7-2.
Hespeler (0-1) was saddled with the loss after tossing 5.0 innings and allowing seven runs on seven hits.
Heidi Foreman pitched 2.0 scoreless innings in relief and scattered three hits. Makayla Carver (1-1) surrendered two runs on two hits and struck out 10 to register the win.
Dunn scored both runs for the Monarchs as Jacobs and Hespeler tallied the only hits in game two.
Methodist returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 18, with a doubleheader against Lynchburg at Price Field beginning at 1 pm.
