FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Methodist baseball team kicked off the 2017 Diamond Invitational with a 6-4 victory against Mary Washington at Armstrong-Shelley Field on Friday night.
With the win, the Monarchs snap a four-game losing streak and move to 3-4 on the year, while the Eagles opened their season with a loss to fall to 0-1 overall.
MU started the scoring in the home half of the first inning when
Mathias Carter drew a lead-off walk and
Pete Wildeboer reached base on a bunt single. Each runner advanced on a balk before a great jump from Carter allowed him to steal home for the first run of the game, 1-0.
Will May followed with a sacrifice bunt to score Wildeboer from third base, who also advanced on the previous play, 2-0. The Monarchs plated another run in the following inning as
Lucas Scott scored on an RBI single to center field by Carter.
In the top of the third inning, UMW cut the lead after Kyle Bynum posted a two-out, RBI single through the left side with runners on the corners to score Thomas Weaver, 3-1. MU responded with another run in the bottom half of the third when
Clay Richardson slapped a base hit through the right side to score
Kevin Williams, who reached base on an error by the first baseman, 4-1.
The Eagles scored two runs in the fifth on a two-run double down the right field line that narrowly missed first baseman
Alex Kachler's glove. The Monarchs were able to get two straight ground balls to end the inning holding on to a 4-3 lead. UMW eventually tied the game in the seventh on a sacrifice fly to left field with the bases loaded, 4-4.
The Green and Gold loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth after Richardson drew a walk followed by two batters getting hit by a pitch. Kachler lined a two-out single to right-center field to score
Seth Patrick and Richardson to regain the lead, 6-4. The Eagles threatened in the visitor's half of the ninth after a lead-off double by Brian Burns. He advanced to third on a groundout to short, but UMW loaded the bases on a walk and a hit batter. After
Madison Cook entered with two outs, he was able to induce a ground ball-out to seal the win and leave the bases loaded.
Noah Dawson (1-0) received the win after allowing one run (earned) on two hits with five strikeouts in 3.2 innings of relief. Cook (1) recorded a save for getting the final out.
Greg Johnson (ND) got the start and yielded three runs (all earned) on seven hits in 5.0 innings on the mound .
