Monarchs Fall to Mariners in Extra Innings, 7-5

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Methodist baseball team dropped a 7-5 contest in 10 innings against Mitchell at the 2017 Armstrong Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
 
With the result, the Monarchs drop to 6-5 on the year and end a four-game winning streak, while the Mariners improve to 1-1 overall.
 
Mitchell got on the board first in the second inning after starting the inning with back-to-back singles. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt before each runner crossed the plate, 2-0. The Monarchs started the fourth inning with a single by Mathias Carter before he scored on a two-run home run by Davis Cass. Following the homer, Tyler Hardee hit a triple and crossed home plate on a double by Will May to give MU a 3-2 lead.
 
In the top of the fifth, the Mariners tied the game after consecutive singles followed by a sacrifice fly, 3-3. The score held until the seventh inning when Carter led off the home half with a double. Pete Wildeboer reached on a throwing error by the pitcher as Carter came around and scored, 4-3. Cass followed with a double and eventually scored on a sacrifice bunt by May. Mitchell struck back with two runs in the visitor half of the eighth on one hit and two errors before scoring twice in the top of the 10th inning to take a 7-5 lead. Methodist got one runner in scoring position, but could not capitalize.
 
Brian Ricker pitched 1.1 scoreless innings allowing just one hit and striking out two to get the win (1-0). Marcus Guadarrama (1) registered a save after closing the 10th inning with two strikeouts. Madison Cook (0-1) was saddled with the loss after pitching 2.1 innings of relief. He scattered three hits and surrendered four runs (two earned). Tyler Beyel (ND) started on the mound and went 5.1 innings with eight hits, three runs (earned)  and three strikeouts.
 
Carter went 2 for 5 at the plate with a double and two runs scored, while Cass and May each recorded two RBI. Clay Richardson also went 2 for 4 at the plate. The Monarchs left 12 men on base.
 
Methodist returns to action tomorrow, Feb. 26 against Rutgers-Camden beginning at 2 pm.
