Monarchs Defeat Spartans, 6-4

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The Methodist baseball team earned a 6-4 victory against York (Pa.) at the Ripken Complex in Myrtle Beach on Wednesday afternoon.
 
With the win, the Monarchs improve to 8-5 on the season, while the Spartans drop to 1-2 overall.
 
MU got on the board in the second inning after loading the bases with two outs. Kevin Williams drew a walk, which allowed Clay Richardson to cross home plate, 1-0. In the home half of the inning, York tied the game after taking advantage of an error on the play, 1-1. After another walk, York scored again after a runner on third came around to score during a double play to take the lead, 2-1. In the bottom of the third, the Spartans tagged on another run after taking advantage of two errors in the inning, 3-1.
 
Lucas Scott started the top of the seventh inning with a walk before coming around to score on a single to centerfield by Williams, 3-2. Matthias Carter and Brennen Brown loaded the bases after reaching on a throwing error and a walk, respectively, which forced a pitching change. Davis Cass collected an RBI after fouling out before Alex Kachler brought in a runner on a sacrifice bunt to give the Monarchs a 4-3 lead. York tied the game in the eighth inning after a two-out single followed by an RBI double to left-center field, 4-4.
 
In the top of the ninth, Carter led off with his first collegiate home run to right-center field to give the Monarchs a 5-4 lead. MU tacked on another run as Brown scored on a passed ball to seal a 6-4 victory.
 
Madison Cook (1-1) earned the win after throwing 1.0 inning of relief and allowing one run on two hits. Tyler Carmen (ND) got the start and tossed 2.0 innings yielding two runs (unearned) on one hit with two walks and a strikeout. Sam Berman and Thomas Dean each threw 2.0 innings and combined to allow just one run on two hits. Nick Norton (1) recorded the save after pitching the ninth inning and scattering one hit.
 
Jeff Noss (0-1) was strapped with the loss after giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits in 3.0 innings of relief. Joel Kenney (ND) got the start and threw 6.0 innings and scattered four hits and allowed one run (earned) with eight strikeouts and three walks.
 
Brown went 2 for 4 at the plate with a run scored, while Will May went 2 for 3. Lucas Scott drew three walks and scored ones, as Williams ended the day with one hit, two RBI and a run scored.
 
Methodist opens USA South play on Friday, March 3 against Ferrum at Armstrong-Shelley Field beginning at 4 pm.
