FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader with Meredith at Price Field on Tuesday evening. Meredith took a 1-0 victory in game one before closing the day with a 6-1 win.
Â
With the results, the Monarchs fall to 4-18 on the season behind a 1-4 conference mark. Meanwhile, the Avenging Angels move to 12-10 overall with a 5-1 record in league play.
Â
Meredith scored the lone run in the game one in the first inning. With two runners in scoring position, the Avenging Angels scored on a sacrifice fly to right field, 1-0. The Monarchs had their best chance of getting on the board in the bottom of the fifth frame.
Jessica Orwick lined a pinch-hit double to left-center field before
Savannah Dunn came in to run. In the following at-bat,
Samantha Jacobs reached first on a throwing error, but Dunn was thrown out at home on a close play at the plate. MU totaled five hits in game one.
Â
Aly Thomas (1-8) went the distance and yielded one earned run on nine hits with one strikeout. Taylor Jackson (6-3) pitched a complete game shutout with five hits, three strikeouts and only one walk.
Â
In game two, Meredith took a 3-0 lead in the visitor side of the third inning. The Avenging Angels had runners on second and third with two outs before a two-run single to left field followed by an RBI single to right field, 3-0. The Green and Gold opened the fourth inning as
Morgan Faircloth reached base on a throwing error.
Carleigh Haywood entered to run for Faircloth and advanced to second on a passed ball. Following a sacrifice bunt by
Hannah Key, Haywood scored on a fielder's choice by
Chloe Hespeler, 3-1. The Avenging Angels added two runs in the fifth inning before another insurance run in the seventh gave them a 6-1 lead.
Â
Hespeler (2-7) was strapped with the loss after tossing all 7.0 innings in the circle. She scattered eight hits and allowed six runs (2 ER) while striking out one batter. Myah Morse (2-3) also threw a complete game and gave up just two hits with one run. She also struck out three and walked four.
Â
The Monarchs tallied two hits in the nightcap as
Heidi Foreman and Hespeler each hit a single.
Â
Due to the winter storm hitting the north east, the scheduled doubleheader with Randolph-Macon tomorrow has been postponed. Methodist will now return to action on Saturday, March 18, at Maryville beginning at 12 pm.
