Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Centry, Goldsmith Lead Monarchs Past Pacers, 77-69

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The freshmen duo of Kodi Centry and Kayla Goldsmith each recorded double-doubles as the Methodist women's basketball team staved off William Peace for a 77-69 victory in the March F. Riddle Center on Sunday afternoon.

Goldsmith ended the day with a game-high 18 points on 8 of 15 shooting from the floor and collected 11 rebounds. She also recorded four steals and three assists. Centry matched a season-high of 16 points and pulled in 17 rebounds, which is the highest mark by a Monarch this season. She also dished out three assists and added a block and a steal.

Kaneya Chambers contributed 14 points and five rebounds in addition to a new career-high of six assists, while Kadie Snipes finished with 12 points.

The win ended a five-game losing skid for the Monarchs as they completed a season sweep of the Pacers. MU sits at 3-17 on the year behind a 3-8 mark in league play, while the Pacers fell to 3-14 overall with a 3-8 mark in conference action.

MU recorded three-consecutive baskets to take a four-point lead (8-4) with 7:08 left in the first quarter before WPU used an 11-4 run to take a three-point advantage (15-12) at the 2:38 mark. A three from Chambers tied the game and consecutive layups from Centry gave the Monarchs a 19-13 lead at the end of the first period.

The Pacers scored the first six points of the second quarter and assumed a 22-19 lead before the Monarchs responded with a 10-2 run capped by a bucket by Centry and regained the lead, 29-24, with 5:08 left in the half. William Peace went on a run of its own, outscoring Methodist 14-5 over the next four minutes before taking a 38-35 lead into halftime.

After a layup by Shaniya  Taylor at the 3:34 mark of the third, the Pacers took a six-point lead (50-44), but the Monarchs went on a 12-0 run, started by a three-point play by Kaven Joyner that eclipsed the end of the third and into the fourth quarter. Three-straight jumpers from the Pacers tied the game once again at 56-56, but back-to-back buckets by Goldsmith and Chambers gave the Monarchs the lead for good on their way to a 77-69 victory.

MU shot 40.6 percent (28-69) from the field, while WPU made 42.2 percent (27-64) of its shots, including just 1 of 13 from long range. Methodist outrebounded the visitors by a 54-30 margin, and took advantage of 27 second-chance points as opposed to just five by the Pacers.

In addition, Amber Scott finished with four points and seven rebounds. She also added a steal.

For William Peace, Taylor and Jayde Grant each recorded 16 points, while Dejah Ceatham posted 15. Mikayla Ray, who entered the game as the USA South's leading scorer, finished with 13 points and was held under 15 points for just the fourth time this season. Ray also completed a double-double with 10 rebounds and contributed three blocks and two steals.

Methodist returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 31, against N.C. Wesleyan in the Riddle Center beginning at 7:30 pm. The game was rescheduled earlier this season due to inclement weather.
