Early Goals lead to win at Averett

DANVILLE, Va.  Methodist scored three goals -- two by Capri Clark -- on the initial four shots of the game Saturday at Campbell Stadium, forging a three-goal advantage that held up in a 3-2 USA South Athletic Conference women's soccer victory over host Averett University.

Clark opened the scoring with a carom off the post at the 2:49 mark, followed by a converted penalty kick opportunity by Sierra Swasey early in the 11th minute. Clark added what would become the winning goal just short of eight minutes later.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Averett, 3-2
Records: Methodist 6-8 overall (2-3 USA South); Averett 4-10 (2-3)
Location: Campbell Stadium; Danville, Virginia

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Quickly. Miranda Gay had her shot blocked within the box approximately 100 seconds into the contest but the Methodist attack persisted, resulting in Clark's unassisted tally one minute later.
  • Clark moved through the middle of the Cougars' defense into the box, then beat Averett goalkeeper Bailee Brown with a shot that nicked off the post.
  • A turnover with Averett's next possession resulted in more Monarch pressure in their attacking third, with two fouls on the Cougars helping Methodist maintain its downhill momentum.
  • That pressure resulted in an Averett foul in the box, setting up Swasey at the PK mark where she converted for her fourth goal of the season.
  • Once again, the Methodist defense forced a turnover, transitioned back into the Averett defensive third, and added another goal, this one coming from Clark with an assist by Haley Bowles.
  • Bowles leveled a shot deep into the box to Clark, who spun and beat Brown with a shot inside the left post.
  • Facing a three-goal deficit not even 19 minutes into the game forced Averett into desperate attack mode. The Cougars did, in fact, answer, beginning with an Emily Meador shot at the 19:11 mark which Monarch goalie Maggie Hunt stopped.
  • Methodist responded with a pair of shots that Brown saved, only to have the Cougars turn back upfield and clang one shot off the crossbar before removing the goose-egg on the scoreboard with a goal from Eimear Reddin in the 38th.
  • An Averett flurry off a corner kick opportunity in the final 30 seconds of the opening half resulted in a second Cougar goal.
  • One shot was blocked by a defender but located by an Averett forward who put a hard shot at Hunt. The save was made but Hunt couldn't corral the rebound, allowing Adriana Perez to put one into the netting with 17 seconds remaining before the halftime break.
  • Both teams had scoring opportunities in the scoreless second half. Averett's Brown collected a pair of saves while Hunt came up with four -- including one late in the 83rd that preserved the Methodist advantage.
  • Hunt finished with six saves in earning the win, and Brown ended with four saves in enduring the loss between the pipes for the home team.
  • Despite the equality of most of the stats, Methodist didn't generate any corner kick chances while the Cougars worked for five in the contest.

COUGAR NOTES
  • Averett recently won a pair of back-to-back games, but with Saturday's loss have now lost two straight.
  • Perez's goal was her team-leading third of the season.
