JUST THE FACTS
What: USA South Tournament, first round
Final score: Methodist def. N.C. Wesleyan, 2-1
Records: Methodist 8-6, N.C. Wesleyan 4-9-1
Location: Monarch SoccerPlex; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first goal was an example of a textbook cross from Bella Nunu as the ball landed right at the feet of Capri Clark near the goal box for a score. That goal came early, in the 11th minute of the first half.
  • N.C. Wesleyan evened up the score with a Jordan Forbess goal as she showed off her skills, dribbling around defenders for the lone Battling Bishops' goal.
  • Alexa Smith scored the game winning goal in the 70th minute off an assist from Sierra Swasey. Smith was able to race into the box and put it behind the goalkeeper.
  • Smith could have scored more than just that one goal in the game. In the 30th minute, Smith was staring at an open goal after dribbling the ball behind the Battling Bishops' goalkeeper. However, defender Victoria Burkhart raced in to rescue the day with a team save. The rebound went back to Smith on a shot that was as equally dangerous as the open goal but Burkhart made another great defense and blocked the shot.
  • On another goal opportunity for Smith, her shot sailed too high after perfect ball placement from Haley Bowles' corner kick.
  • Methodist's defense got back at Burkhart after she broke up a sure-fire goal by Smith. In the 86th minute with Burkhart in good scoring position, both her shots --the initial shot and the rebound was blocked.
  • The Monarchs had several good looks and free runs at goal that had fans groaning when the looks failed to convert into scores. In one instance, Anna Rose Sink delivered a high dagger off a free kick that looked like a sure goal but Kim Lamm responded with an acrobatic play to bat the ball out for a corner kick before the end of the first half.
  • It was not just the Monarchs' lamenting missed chances as Burkhart had a potential first-half equalizer hit off the crossbar.
  • Methodist outshot N.C. Wesleyan in regards to shots on goal, 10-4.
