Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Mustangs hand Monarchs 1st defeat

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C.  Despite Logan Lee's team-high 19 points and four rebounds, Methodist was not able to keep pace with Stevenson (Md.) University Saturday evening, falling to the Mustangs, 92-51, in a non-conference women's basketball contest that opened the 2018 Jean Edge Classic.

The loss was the first for the Monarchs, who had opened their season a week ago with a victory on the road.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Stevenson def. Methodist, 92-51
Records: Methodist 1-1, Stevenson 1-2
Event: 2018 Jean Edge Classic
Location: Everett Gym, N.C. Wesleyan College; Rocky Mount, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Mustangs were the ones who got off to a fast start with five unanswered points, but Lee responded with a layup and a 3-pointer to knot the game at 5-5, the first of five tie scores in the opening 10-minute period.
  • Stevenson entered the second quarter with a narrow 19-17 edge, but again it was Lee who answered the call, dropping in a tying jumper for the sixth tie of the contest.
  • Neither team generated much scoring offense over the next few minutes, with Lee eventually pulling Methodist to within a bucket, 25-23, with 6:59 remaining in the quarter.
  • The complexion of the game changed drastically over those final seven minutes as the Mustangs put together a 10-point run before a trey from Kadie Snipes would break the string.
  • An 8-2 spurt by Stevenson closed out the half, allowing the Mustangs to lug a 15-point (43-28) lead into the halftime break.
  • A points explosion in the third quarter -- a total of 48 points -- lit up the scoreboard, but unfortunately for the Monarchs it was Stevenson that got the better of the quarter, out scoring Methodist 30-18.
  • Taking more chances, which resulted in turnovers, and forcing more shots in the final frame left the Monarchs often chasing the Stevenson transition game until the final steal just before the final horn.

BOX IT UP
  • Lee and Kody Centry scored 19 and 9 points, respectively, for Methodist, which also picked up 5 points from Tyzarea Alexander and four each from Kaneya Chambers and Kayla Goldsmith.
  • Lee came away with a team best four rebounds, but overall the advantage off the rim weighed heavily in Stevenson's favor as the Mustangs finished the game with a 48-19 edge.
  • Those rebounding numbers helped lead Stevenson to 18 second-chance points, while disallowing the Monarchs any put backs.
  • Turnovers also played into the outcome as the Mustangs forced 25 miscues from Methodist, and scored 32 points off those opportunities.
  • Denia Campbell, with 27 points, led a quartet of Mustangs into double-figure scoring during their win.

UP NEXT
  • Methodist continues action in the Jean Edge Classic on Sunday, squaring off against Hollins University at 4 p.m.
  • Stevenson plays host N.C. Wesleyan in Sunday afternoon's opening contest of the Classic.
