CONWAY, S.C. For the second game in a row, NCAA Division III Methodist men's basketball stepped up in competition level, traveling to Coastal Carolina University on Tuesday evening to take on the D-I Chaticleers.
In the exhibition contest for the Monarchs it was CCU that never trailed in the 88-51 outcome.
THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Coastal Carolina def. Methodist, 88-51
Records: Exhibition game for Methodist
Location: HTC Center, Conway, S.C.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Chanticleers broke quickly after the opening tip, scoring the first five points of the game before Dante Burden would drive the lane for a layup to get Methodist on the scoreboard.
- An 8-0 run by CCU pushed the score to 13-2 but Sam Mingledoff's jumper cut into the deficit.
- CCU, with six players over 6-feet-6 compared to just two from Methodist, used its height to make things tough on the Monarchs, pushing that 13-4 lead out to a 41-22 advantage at the halftime break.
- The Monarchs gained their footing, so to speak, in the second half, though, picking up 37 points over the final 20 minutes for a solid showing against their D-I opponent.
- In that second frame, CCU had elevated its lead to 27, at 54-27, but twice over the next minutes Methodist whittled the deficit down to 18 points. First at 56-38 on a Chris Pernell 3-pointer, and soon after, at 59-41 on a trey from Burden.
- The Chanticleers muscled their way out of that downward trend, closing strongly through to the final horn.
MONARCH HIGHLIGHTS
- Burden paced the offense with a 14-point night, second most of all players.
- Mingledoff, Pernell and Kaymon Mitchell each added eight points for Methodist, while Mingledoff and Malik Manley topped the team's rebounding efforts, fighting for six boards apiece.
- Pernell's night included a 2-for-4 evening from behind the arc.
- Coach David Smith went deep into his bench and received 30 points from the non-starters.
- Smith also had to be pleased about Methodist's 21-17 edge in points off turnovers, and a 10-2 advantage in fast-break points.
- Helping spur the transition game were Burden and Mingledoff who registered five and four steals, respectively.
