Monarchs Win Conference Opener Behind Burden’s 27

MISENHEIMER, N.C. The Monarchs defeated Pfeiffer University, 85-77, in the USA South Athletic Conference opener for both teams Wednesday evening.

Behind Dante Burden's efficient 27 points on 12 shots, Methodist improves to 2-4 overall and starts conference play off right, at 1-0.

The victory snaps a two-game losing streak to Pfeiffer after the Falcons swept Methodist last season. The 85 points scored by the Monarchs represent a season-high in this early season while the 77 points scored by the Falcons represent a season-low after Pfeiffer scored 113 and 135 in its other two games, both wins.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. Pfeiffer, 85-77
Records: Methodist 2-4 (1-0 USA South), Pfeiffer 2-1 (0-1 USA South)
Location: Merner Gym; Misenheimer, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Five minutes into the second half, the Monarchs went on a 19-7 tear that saw a three-point, 41-38 lead blossom into a 60-45 score. At one point in that five-minute stretch, Burden scored eight straight points for Methodist, all coming from inside the paint.
  • The Monarchs were bullies in the low post as they outscored Pfeiffer, 46-32 in points in the paint. It helped that Methodist picked its shots en route to going 32-of-60 from the field (53.3 percent) while Pfeiffer shot 27-of-69 (39.1 percent) from the field and 10-of-39 (25.6 percent) from behind the arc.
  • Down 68-55 with less than four minutes left, the Falcons made three consecutive shots behind the arc -- two by Tyjarek Simmons to bring the deficit down to under double-digits to the score of 72-64. However, Pfeiffer never could get closer than five points as Methodist hit 11-of-14 free throws in the final two minutes.
  • Methodist got out to a hot start and never relinquished the lead in a game that featured only one lead change and one tied score. After the Falcons scored first, Sam Mingledoff and Burden each made layups to take the lead. The Monarchs took the lead and raced out to a 19-4 lead midway through the first half.
  • The Falcons would not fold easily in the first half as Pfeiffer countered immediately with a 12-0 run punctuated by a Craig Sabb steal and dunk to bring the score to 19-16.
  • When Malik Manley made a layup to up the Monarchs' lead to 25-16, Josiah Avington hit back-to-back three pointers to bring the lead back down to only three points.
  • With three minutes left in the first half, Pfeiffer got as close as they possibly could to taking the lead when Kyle Riddley made both of his free throws to make it a one-point game. Burden responded with back-to-back layups to give Methodist some breathing room for the eventual 31-26 lead going into half time.

STAT FACTS
  • Burden had his way in the paint as he went 10-of-12 from the field for 27 points. He also shot 70 percent from the line (7-of-10).
