THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Roanoke def. Methodist, 77-70
Records: Methodist 4-7, Roanoke 7-3
Location: Cregger Center, Salem, Va.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Methodist went into the halftime break with a 40-36 advantage, working its way out of a six-point deficit over the final 6 minutes and 10 seconds of the half.
- However, the Maroons came out of recess with a 9-0 run to start the half, and then when trailing 56-54 nearing the 10-minute mark of the half, embarked on their 14-2 run that spanned nearly five minutes.
- The Monarchs pulled to within five, 75-70, on a pair of Burden free throws with 91 seconds to play, but those would be the final points for the visitors.
- Though Roanoke caught fire at the opening of the second half, Methodist answered immediately with a 7-2 run of its own to pull even, at 47-47.
- The Monarchs later led at 50-49, 52-52 and then at 56-54 before the Maroons turned the tables, beginning their late and lengthy run with a CJ Miles 3-pointer that erased the home team's final deficit of the contest.
THE NUMBERS GAME
- Burden's 19 led Methodist, but Miles -- who scored 10 of his 14 in the second half -- and Sam Mingledoff (10 points) also reached double figures for the Monarchs.
- Mingledoff came away with a team-high six rebounds, while Garren Dearman dished out a game-best six assists to go along with his own eight-point afternoon.
- Roanoke's Josh Freund posted a double-double to lead four Maroons into double-digit scoring, finishing the day with 22 points and 12 rebounds.
- While the Monarchs hit for 43 percent from the floor, the Maroons would eclipse that figure with a 55 percent afternoon, which included 6-of-15 (40 percent) shooting from behind the 3-point arc.
- The difference in turnovers was not significant, Methodist with 12 and Roanoke with 10, but the Maroons were more efficient in scoring off their turnovers -- 23 points vs. 14 by the Monarchs.
